USTDA Connects U.S. Industry with Energy and Technology Opportunities in India

Arlington, Virginia – The U.S. Trade and Development Agency signed a grant supporting BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), an electricity distribution company in India, to develop and deploy India’s first Behavioral Energy Efficiency (BEE) program. Oracle America, Inc. (Redwood Shores, CA) will carry out the pilot project using Oracle Utilities’ Opower customer engagement software.

As India faces a growing demand for reliable electricity, utilities are seeking solutions that will reduce the need to build costly new generation, transmission and distribution facilities. The development of this BEE program will demonstrate the ability to use software to empower consumers to reduce energy waste, improve energy efficiency, and lower peak-hour consumption in India.

Henry Steingass, USTDA’s Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia said, “USTDA is proud to support India’s first Behavioral Energy Efficiency program, which will utilize innovative U.S. software to meet BRPL’s growing energy needs through energy-efficient practices. We are proud to connect BRPL with Oracle Utilities on this first-in-market pilot with the potential for replication throughout India.”

Oracle Utilities’ Opower BEE programs have been successfully deployed at over 100 utilities around the world and have cumulatively saved over seventeen terawatt-hours of energy. Following the program launch at India Smart Grid Week by BPRL and Oracle, work on the BEE program will begin in Delhi.
