Workshop: Energy Storage Project Opportunities in South Africa
Date: February 21, 2019

Energy storage increases grid flexibility and can offset the need to use diesel and other fossil fuels for peaking power. As the cost of storage systems declines, the importance of high-quality and safe technology is paramount to the effective deployment of energy storage. If deployed effectively, energy storage will increase the capacity of South Africa’s electric grid to integrate renewable electricity generation sources and improve the operating efficiency of existing plants.

This workshop will feature presentations by U.S. and South African experts on standards-related issues that underpin safe and efficient energy storage technology to support Eskom’s 800 MW battery energy storage systems project, for which the bidding process may begin as early as the first quarter of 2019. The event will also foster discussion of cross-cutting issues and opportunities for U.S. – South Africa cooperation.
