USTDA Expands Support for Civil Nuclear Energy in the Philippines

Arlington, VA â€“ The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will bring a delegation of Filipino nuclear energy leaders to the United States on a reverse trade mission to build partnerships with U.S. suppliers of advanced nuclear energy technologies and support the Philippines’ energy security.

While in the United States from October 10-17, the 15-member delegation of government and private sector representatives will travel to Washington, DC and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they will see on-site nuclear technology deployments and discuss factors for deploying nuclear energy infrastructure. While in the United States, the delegation will also meet U.S. companies and see demonstrations of cutting-edge U.S. technologies that can strengthen energy security in the Philippines, as well as engage with U.S. government officials to share best practices on regulatory frameworks. USTDA will also host a financing roundtable with U.S. government and international stakeholders to explore mechanisms for securing finance for project implementation.

USTDA will host a public business briefing in Arlington, VA on October 15 for U.S. companies, industry associations, nonprofits, and other potential partners to engage with the delegation. Companies can learn about upcoming commercial prospects and engage one-on-one with delegates to showcase their advanced nuclear energy solutions. The delegation also seeks to connect with representatives from the full U.S. civil nuclear energy ecosystem who can share best practices, provide technical expertise, and support their workforce and capacity-building efforts. The Philippines is planning to introduce nuclear power into its energy mix, targeting 1.2 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2032 through small modular reactors (SMRs), microreactors, and other advanced technologies, creating significant opportunities for U.S. firms.

The visit continues USTDA’s efforts to meet the Philippines’ energy security needs, including a similar program to promote U.S. smart grid technologies and funding for a feasibility study to evaluate U.S. SMR designs and develop an implementation roadmap for the country’s first SMR nuclear power plant.
