With most populations across Africa expected to double by 2050, investment in healthcare infrastructure is crucial to ensuring a healthy and prosperous future for the continent.
In December 2022, in response to this significant demand, USTDA announced the launch of its Coalition for Healthcare Infrastructure in Africa. The Coalition is a collaboration between USTDA and U.S. industry help to meet the healthcare needs of our African partners and to increase access to quality healthcare products and services for millions of individuals across the continent.
In fiscal year 2022, USTDA tripled the number of healthcare infrastructure development activities it supports in Africa. The programming is expected to unlock $719 million in financing for high-quality healthcare infrastructure, and to promote significant U.S. exports of advanced technologies and services.
Through the Coalition, USTDA will use its full suite of tools for project preparation and partnership-building activities to define technical requirements and attract financing for priority healthcare infrastructure projects. It will focus on the following areas:
- Resilient healthcare and cross-cutting sector infrastructure, including electrification and connectivity;
- Accessible and effective infrastructure for delivery of healthcare services that can improve health equity and security; and
- Enabling environments, including strengthened individual country regulatory frameworks and continental regulatory convergence.
The Coalition for Healthcare Infrastructure in Africa advances the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, specifically its aim to strengthen global health security through investments in healthcare infrastructure and patient-centered access.
USTDA collaborates with an array of industry associations through the Coalition, including the USA Healthcare Alliance, AdvaMed, PhRMA, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Pharmacopeia.
